Do Sphynx Cats Get Sunburned

This led me to wonder what happens to Sphynx cats in the summer months. Are they able to take advantage of the sun? Or do they need special care to avoid sunburn?

I’ve been researching the topic for quite some time and I’m excited to share my findings with you.

Do Sphynx Cats Get Sunburned?:

Because of their lack of fur, Sphynx cats are prone to sunburns. Sphynx cats have thin skin which makes them more sensitive to the sun, especially if they spend a lot of time outdoors.

Can You Take A Sphynx Cat Outside?:

Due to their lack of hair, a Sphynx is more susceptible to sunburn than other breeds. Therefore, you should be extra careful when taking them outdoors.

If you do decide to take them outside, make sure you don’t take them out on a hot sunny day and also limit the amount of time that they have out.

How Do You Protect A Sphynx Cat From The Sun?:

The answer to this question is pretty simple. Keep your cat indoors. In the summer, it’s especially important to keep your cat indoors because the heat can cause her to overheat and dehydrate.

In addition to that, she may be more likely to get sunburns on her sensitive skin. If you live in a hot climate, you should also consider getting your cat a fan to help cool her down. And if your cat is already outside, you should keep her in the shade and limit her time outdoors.

Can You Put Sunscreen On Sphynx Cats?:

No. Never use human sunscreen on any breed of cat as they contain harmful chemicals that can be fatal to the cat.

To my knowledge, there is currently no sunblock that is 100% safe for felines.

How Do You Know If Your Cat Is Sunburned?:

If your cat has been outside in the sun for too long, it might come home with some sunburn.

Cats with sunburned skin can look pink or red, scabby, or crusty. Their ears might look swollen and the skin may feel very warm to the touch.

If you suspect that your cat has had too much sun exposure, have him checked by a vet immediately.

How Do You Treat A Sphynx Sunburn?:

If the sunburn is mild, you can apply coconut oil or an oatmeal bath to calm the burn. The sunburn should go away on its own in a few days.

However, if the sunburn is severe, you will need to take them to a local vet.

You may also need to administer topical or oral steroids to relieve the pain and swelling.

If the burn has become infected, your vet may recommend an antibiotic ointment or oral antibiotics.
